With a smokey and seductive alto, 7-time IBMA (International Bluegrass Music Association) Bass Player of the Year, Missy Raines, heads up this all-acoustic ensemble. The territory The New Hip covers is broad and the compass is set by Raines, planted right in the center of the stage directing with her bass every bit as much as she’s playing it. Raines, “…launches her well-tended craft off the bluegrass dock into the waters of jazz and folk, holding onto the anchor of bluegrass while pushing steadily at the boundaries of the music that engulfs her.” -Country Standard Time

Raines’ bluegrass roots are deep and long-reaching with touring and recording stints with 1st generation legends such as Eddie Adcock, Mac Wiseman, Jesse McReynolds, Josh Graves and Kenny Baker. A former member of the Claire Lynch Band, The Brother Boys, and one half of the acoustic super duo, Jim Hurst (who played for Windy City House Concerts three years ago this month) and Missy Raines, Missy is one of the most respected and popular figures within the bluegrass community. And in the small world department, Missy played with Bill Evans and our close friend, Steve Smith in the band Cloud Valley early on.

Since planting themselves in the ‘upper east side’ of Texas, Adler & Hearne’s music has grown deep roots in the sandy red soil of their Spring Hollow Organic Song Farm – a place considered hallowed ground by the stream of countless friends and family who gather there for the reverie of music making, and good times spent alongside the deep spring waters of ‘Goolsby’s Pool.’

In concert, Adler & Hearne’s songs are a spirited blend of original, folk-jazz blues-grass. She (Adler) sings and plays rhythm guitar. He (Hearne) sings and plays guitar, mandolin and harmonica. Their live sets range from crooning songs of love and longing, losing and finding – to covering touchy subjects with unexpected musical overtones – to camping it up with modern-day spirituals steeped in dry wit.

Jim Hurst’s unique picking style and mastery of bluegrass guitar wows audiences and is revered by both novice guitar players and his musical peers. His eclectic career has made him a remarkable performer, an experienced instructor and a highly sought after session musician. His affability and gregariousness make him one of the most approachable musicians of his caliber.

The product of a musical family, Jim honed his musical style after being influenced by the likes of Tony Rice, Clarence White and Jerry Reed. He got national exposure with Holly Dunn’s Rio Band playing acoustic guitar and mandolin, and singing harmonies; followed by several high profile television and radio appearances while touring with Trisha Yearwood playing acoustic and electric guitar, and harmony vocals. Jim also experienced performances with Travis Tritt, and Sara Evans.

Craving to play more bluegrass, Jim joined Grammy-nominated Claire Lynch and The Front Porch String Band in 1995. Desiring greater freedom to create his own musical path, Jim left the Claire Lynch Band in 2010 to embark on a solo career. His shows meet with rave reviews as he astounds his audiences with his brilliant playing yet makes people feel right at home with his humble congenial and funny persona. Jim’s solo show, which allows his personal style and unique creativity to come through in spades, is what keeps his audiences mesmerized.

Brian Ashley Jones

Brian Ashley Jones defies categorization. He is a great guitarist, songwriter and singer. But his work crosses smoothly over folk, blues, bluegrass and even touches on crooner of ballads. With songs that tell stories, hit a groove, make you happy or thoughtful or even occasionally wistful, a honey-smooth tenor voice and guitar licks worthy of any shredder.

Brian’s compositions have been placed in film and television and recorded by a variety of other performing artists. Based in Nashville, Tennessee, Brian performs internationally at festivals and concert series and leads seminars for music education programs, music business conferences, and NSAI chapters around the USA.

Brian’s current independent release, Courier, made the Top 40 of the Roots Music Report, broke the Top 100 of the Americana Music Association’s album chart, and is receiving widespread commercial, college, public, and international radio play. The swampy instrumental “Pull ’em Up” has been featured in the widely acclaimed PBS television series “Road Trip Nation” and footage of Jones performing “Free To Miss You” live at The Bluebird Cafe has been featured in the British network television show “Amanda Holden’s Fantasy Lives”. The Brian Ashley Jones Trio showcased these songs as official performers at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and Brian was nominated for Best American Roots Guitar Player in the Alternate Root’s 2011 Reader’s Choice Awards!

Along with his own busy touring schedule, Jones has accompanied a diverse batch of artists on stage and in the recording studio including Grammy Award winning songwriter Jon Vezner, Eric Heatherly, Caroline Aiken, Thom Shepherd, Sara Hickman, Donna Hopkins, David Gans, Corinne West, Doug Jones, Donovan Roberts, Jeff Black, Diane Durrett, Ralph Roddenbery, Deep Blue Sun, Celeste Krenz, Wyatt Easterling, and Spuyten Duyvil.

Brian Ashley Jones has spent enough time as a Nashville-based singer, songwriter and guitarist to feel as if he’s in the music business for the long haul.

Music “is what I’m supposed to be doing, and I can’t imagine doing anything else,” Jones said in a recent interview with Dan Armonaitis for GoUpstate.com. “And most every other songwriter or musician I know who’s done it this long pretty much has the same attitude. … We just all feel compelled to do it, even when it defies logic.”

Brian will be joined by bassist Geoff Henderson on upright bass, adding additional depth and interest to the performance. We’ll have a great time and enjoy some great music. Please plan to join us for a lovely afternoon!

Saturday, January 21, 2012: Hard Road Trio: Steve Smith, Chris Sanders and Anne Luna

Las Alturas House Concerts is proud to present The Hard Road Trio (Steve Smith, Chris Sanders and Anne Luna). Many of you are already familiar with the Hard Road Trio, or a least Steve and Chris. For those who have seen them recently, you already know they just keep getting better.

Steve is a virtuoso on mandolin, guitar and banjo and a fine singer and songwriter, internationally known as a performer and teacher. Chris is a singer and songwriter and guitarist and teacher, but that doesn’t convey the beauty of her soaring voice. Anne Luna is one of my favorite bass players, as well as a singer and songwriter. Her playing (on a full size acoustic bass several times bigger than she is) adds a rich, full sound to the trio, always tastefully supporting the music.

Steve, Chris and Anne are each fine musicians on their own. As a trio, they are even more than the sum of the parts. Regular touring over the last couple years has tightened up their playing. Beautiful harmonies, tight ensemble playing and blistering instrumental solos make for an exciting show.
